A tribute to Syd Mead
Back in 2012 in Detroit, I met Syd Mead and had a long discussion about his career and ultimately how his work inspired the new generation of designers, artists and creators.
—
Approval honor
Along the discussion, I showed him my Graviton tribute sketch and he approved right away by signing my print: “Graviton Forever” Thank you Syd!

Sketches
First, I had to enter into Syd’s world, trying not to get lost among all his beautiful landscapes and futuristic structures, perfectly crafted with human(oid)s… Then I started sketching to find a vehicle that would fit into his universe…
—
Final concept
Once I was happy with the vehicle’s stance and proportions, I started 3D modeling and rendering. below is the final color-graded composition as well as 2 iterations showing different moods, atmospheres and scenes.
—
Artwork variants
The idea of having the Graviton seating in a huge futuristic hangar was very pleasing. Therefore I’ve made 2 artworks showcasing the vehicle both in maintenance by robotic arms (first image below) and in storage awaiting to explore uncharted lands (second image below).

Featured
The Graviton was featured in Nuthin’ But Mech vol. 3 book from Design Studio Press.
